Battle Royal (English Cafe 115)

In today’s English Cafe 115, Jeff talked about professional wrestling on American television. Sometimes, professional wrestlers will participate in a battle royals, where a large group of fighters enter the ring and the last person standing is the winner.

Here is an example of a battle royal. Remember that this is for entertainment and that all of it is staged (rehearsed; planned), and the wrestlers are not supposed to really get hurt.

The announcers say that it’s every man for himself in the ring, which means each person is trying to help him or herself, and is not concerned about anyone else. In other words, each fighter is fighting alone, without any help from anyone else.

Do you find professional wrestling convincing? Do you find it entertaining?

I like martial arts, I’m doing karate for more than 10 years. And in my opinion any planned shows are not really interesting not only for me but also for other people who’s professionals in some kinds of martial arts.
But I found that many people who don’t do martial arts, really like watching these entertainment shows. It’s very specific type of entertainment and is not considered for everyone.
This kind of wrestling is too far from reality))))

And the only thing I don’t understand why “professional wrestling” is an entertainment show, since the term “professional” is considered as something very serious, true, actual.

Anyway, I’ve got lots of information from this episode and learned couple of new English words 😉
    Thanks Lusy and Jeff! 🙂

According to the french man i am, profesional wrestling was very popular in the early 80’s, when the first private television channel started broadcasting, at last, people got bored, and i think there’s no more profesional wrestling on the french television. Most people considering that like a theater, better than actors or a sport.
Thanks for the quality of your podcasts.

Some times it is very difficult to say anything about something you don¡t know, and I do not know anything about any fight on rings. So I don’t like it at all.
It should be one of the last places you’ll ever find me, watching to something similar as boxeo, fights, or similar.
But I like to see judo at atletic competitions or Karate, or other martial arts. If I repeat in other life, nobody knows what may happen, I would like to do
martial arts, it has to bee a pleasure doing that as an way of life for mind and health.
I like orient arts much more that our occident sports.

Professional wrestling like the WWE and TNA wouldn’t have had the appeal it has now if it weren’t for the elements of soap opera in it. It’s like watching any other TV Drama series…the conflict, romance, passions, violence not to mention blood and gore. This is what appeals to viewers in the whole world.
