“As Time Goes By” from Casablanca

In this week’s English Cafe 203, Jeff talked about the classic movie Casablanca. The main hit (very popular) song from this movie was “As Time Goes By.”

The video below has a montage (collection of short videos edited together) from the movie.  There are spoilers (information that will tell you what happens in the story), so if you haven’t seen the movie yet and want to see it, you may only want to listen, and not watch the montage.

“As Time Goes By”

(music and words by Herman Hupfeld; sung by Frank Sinatra)

You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental (basic) things apply (is applicable; is relevant),
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo (try to gain each others’ love)
They still say, “I love you.”
On that you can rely (depend)
No matter what the future brings,
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date (old-fashioned).
Hearts full of passion (strong emotion of love)
Jealousy (the emotion of wanting what others have) and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate (partner; lover; wife),
That no one can deny.

It’s still the same old story
A fight for love and glory (recognition for achieving something great)
A case of do or die (something that must be done, even though it is difficult and/or dangerous)
The world will always welcome lovers,
As time goes by.

It’s still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers,
As time goes by.

  2. gregorex says:

It’s very strange that usually unfulfilled love is the most romantic and “lived happily ever after” is just cheesy 😉

  3. Peter says:

I have seen it like 10 times . It was one of my projects for English College course back in college.

  4. Peter says:

English college is mandetory native and non-native must take it ,can not get around it and it is a pain .

  5. Sorry, I did mean, Thank you Lucy! 😉

  6. Vaclav says:

Casablanca is one of my favourite movies. Lucy and Jeff, thank you for the reminiscence of that and thank you for wonderful Frank Sinatra´s song.

  7. emiliano says:

I have no words to say a thing about this film, the song, the Voice, the two actors so wonderful and well known, the End so romantic and the
way it was done without not too much money at that time.
But it won the Oscar to the best film the same year I was born, and the final phrase “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,”
has been one of the phrase we use to say once and again from time to time.
Yes, It´s a lovely song that I like very much and Frank Sinatra´s Voice is so perfect…
    Thanks so much Lucy.

  8. rodrigo says:

Great great movie, I have watched these movie many times, it never bored me, Bogie it’s one of my favorite actors; “its looking at you kid”

  9. Patricia Helena says:

I’ve never seen Casablanca but I know this is a wonderful movie, in other words, this movie is a vintage. The love still being fashionble…:) 🙂 As always, a excelent topic! 🙂

  10. Peter says:

    Hi, my Fellow EslPod reveler,

seems like Jeff’s some how inflammatory comment on the film “Casablanca” has stirred up a great deal of emotions among you guys. As I said before I have seen the film like 10 times for my individual project .
I solemnly back up Jeff’s claim about the movie and how great the movie is. Beside the entertaining aspect of the movie ,the movie carries simple yet educational dialogues all along, particularly for us who are trying to get a hang of this border less language ( a makeshift term)
accordingly, I ,as jeff did , strongly recommend you guys to watch the English version of it,as I did and never rued, time after time until you make a muscle memory of its catch phrases and terms. Trust me, they will come to rescue frequently( more often than not)

If you are questioning my judgement, trust Jeff judgement that he is always right . Don’t get me wrong. I am not sticking up for him. I am not a kiss a..er ,it is not me.
But, when it comes to English, we all know the hard fact that he is always right.

  11. Peter says:

Which is good for us who are trying ….

  12. Peter says:

    I am Petrified ,

    Terribly sorry Lucy ,

I mentioned Jeff through no fault of my own . You know what , I made the honest mistake or innocent mistake because Jeff usually comes up with these kinds of topics. I read it half way through and presumed Jeff had done the piece.

Thank God That I have one accomplice.

  13. Peter says:

    Lucy,

I am afraid that I have to say : Even moonlight and love songs wear off as time gose by. It is a world principle of common law that old stuff give way to new stuff; it happems over and over.

Nobody lasts long to see the end of it.

It is sad ,but the world we know is wired that way, although we are not better off that way. But,who gives the sh…

  14. Peter says:

Lucy the word montage brought the house down ,English wise,

Thanks plenty . It is a great word that I had not been not aware of it.

Lucy ,seriously, what dont you know?

  15. Peter says:

had been not aware of it

  16. Peter says:

Lucy , Again sorry for the rookie mistake

I don’t know what possessed me that I put down Jeff.

  17. emiliano says:

It´s funny to read you Peter, I like it, it seems to me I´m reading Stephanie Meyer´s book “Breaking Down” the chapters where Jacob is
writing. If you don´t read it, please Peter read that book or have a look to it, ……..you´ll be surprised. It´s the part Jacob thinks and write.
I´m finishing it now, after a big deal, and like your way of writing on the blog, so right away without thinking a bit, same like him on the book.
    Yes, it´s really nice.

    Regards.

  18. Peter says:

    Hi mate ,Emiliano

I really appreciate , you take time out of your day to read my nonsense. I m on it my friend .I will take a look at the recommended book.

About your sweet comment , what is to think about bro. We are here to put down our thoughts.

I think it is pretty much what Jeff and Lucy Expect us to do. I usually scribble down the first thing comes to me about the topic in hand.

I know my English is primitive ,but thank God, it is at least illegible.

It is not that I am stickler or pedantic .In fact ,I am very lay back.

Life is short my friend . We don’t get to live twice. We don’t get any younger. Since we cannot recoup the time,we should make best of every breath

    piece out

  19. Casablanca is a good movie to practice english, though Bogie’s New York’s accent is hard to follow…

  20. emiliano says:

Nice thought Peter, and yes that´s true, life is very short and even if we live more years than usual days goes by very fast and when you have a look to our own life we, I, ask myself what I have done with my life along so many years.

Yes, may be your English is primitive but sincere and real, and I like it just for that reason Peter. If you take a look at the four book what Jacob say in the book it´s similar your way of writing but in this case of course is literature but very real too.
I use to write my thoughts in spanish some years ago, now I have the blog and thanks to Lucy and Jeff I write which ever thoughts, opinion or topic I like to.
Also about my own life, what is even more terapeutic.

I think Jeff is an expert in this way of showing us the way of doing it because he put his soul and his own life too meanwhile he is teaching us English, only listening to his cafes we may see how real and amusing he is.
And we like so much his way of teaching English just because a part of himself is there, in his lessons an cafes.
Also Lucy shows us her sharp and nice humor about all kind of life situations, and I adore her way of doing the scrips.

Nonsenses? Not at all Peter, your are very real and usually your put your heart in everything you say, and the blog is really a living place having you here.
    Be sure of that.

  21. Tania says:

Hi ! I wrote the lyric of the song , I tried to sing … Even worse than a teen-ager when I used to
have a secret notebook for special love songs and poems .
Certainly , with a magic wand you transformed us in teen-agers looking for love .
    It’s an amazing feeling.
But I used to have and an album with the most famous artists , including Casablanca of course .
To find out your mate soul … is it impossible ?

All the best for you all. I wish you to find out your mate .

    Tania

  22. Tania says:

Hi , again ! You are very kind , Lutfu . Thank you for your information .

    Tania

  23. lutfu says:

    You are welcome Tania.

  24. Imane says:

I ‘m from the beautiful city of Casablanca in Morocco, where is located in North Africa and not so far from Spain. The movie made the city famous and encouraged people to come from all over the world. In my turn, I’m encouraging you to visit this beautiful city.

  25. Félix says:

    Hi Jeff,
    I´m Felix González from Spain.
I just wanted to tell you that the poscast English cafe about the most famous lines of this wonderful film was great and that maybe it would be a good idea to do more podcast about the dialogues of famous films or even about the lyrics of famous songs.
At the begining I didn´t like the english cafe but now I like them even more than the regular podcasts, I think you do a great job.
    Congratulations
I also wanted to tell you that in Spain Casablanca is a very much considered film, it´s a classic movie, a master piece and the most famous line of the film is when Rick tells Sam to play As time goes by, you know, “play it again Sam” “tócala otra vez Sam”.Everybody knows this line in Spain.
Thank you both again (especially to our unsung hero Lucy) for your work
    Keep like this, you`re great
    Bye
Adios (I know you speak a bit of spanish)
