Rethinking Teacher Training (English Cafe 110)

TeacherIn today’s Cafe, I talk about how to become a teacher in the U.S. One of the problems I didn’t talk about is attrition (the loss of something, sometimes slowly). Teacher attrition happens when teachers quit their jobs and start a new career. This is a huge problem in the U.S., since as many as 50% of all teachers leave teaching in their first five years. Some leave because the pay is not very high, but many leave due to the stress involved in being a teacher nowadays.

An article earlier this week in the New York Times discusses this problem and some possible solutions for it. One solution is to start teacher education students in front of the classroom (teaching) right away, instead of waiting until the end of their training.

    hello, how are you?!

    this is a strange story i had…

Last time my parents and I had a dinner in Cheese Factory in Pasadena (I don’t know whether is Italian or American resturant)
at the end of the dinner, a waiter put a booklet in our table, inside it’s the check. Then, of course, my mom paid the bill, and it’s by cash.
The total amount plus tax is 42 USD. So my mom put 50 USD inside, and we thought the waiter or host will give us back the changes.
But he didn’t. We waited there for so long time…so the waiter came by and asked what’s going on…..
well, we didn’t say anything because at that time we didn’t know how to say or how to ask (we can’t speak English well was the main point…)
At last, we just leaved that resturant, but we did put the tips on the table…

I really don’t understand, is this a kind of American culture that resturant don’t give the changes back?
maybe next time I should tell my parents pay by credit card?

    thanks for listening…

I agree that the pay is not high enough for teachers in many countries.
However most teachers feel a call to teaching.
I learned to respect my teachers as well as my parents.
    Thank you,Jeff and lucy

    Jeff,

I generally understand the custom of leaving a tip in US restaurants, but how do you communicate it? If the bill is about $20 and you want to leave a tip of 20% ($4), will you say “make twenty-four”, “make it twenty-four”, “take twenty-four”, “get twenty-four” or something else? I’m not sure if this phrase can be translated from German which would mean “Machen Sie vierundzwanzig.”

Will the tip be given to the waiter separately? E.g. give 2 $10 bills to him for the bill and 4 $1 separately to him. Give him $25 and expect to get $1 back? How do you handle it, if you don’t pay cash, but use your credit card?

These specific information would be helpful, so thanks for your answer in advance.

    Regards,

    Michael from Hassia, Germany

In the hands of a gifted teacher the willed future is designed.

  5. Q says:

I agree with it, but one problem is how can we know their teaching skill is good enough if they don’t wait untill training end.

I’d really like to know what is the average teachers payment in the U.s. and if it’s a reason for being upset indeed… Because in my country the pay is about $500 per month. And the authorities still insist on having joined the european union as a good idea. When the gas price is about $1.6 per litre…
But moving on to next topic – the checks in U.S. restaurants, I propose wearing pockets full of changes when getting into a restautant in the U.S. Maybe it’s the only way?

  7. emiliano says:

Yes, here in Spain it is the same as in US, also I know France has the same problems with teachers, also England and so many european nations.
They all teachers have high stress life teaching at the schools.
And sometimes it is also a very dangerous profession as many teachers have been attacked by students or parents out of keeping with them.
When I was young my teachers were too much severe, but now there isn’t any discipline. I like the middle, nice middle….¿Where is it?

  8. Igor Grivko says:

In Russia teachers are may be the poorest people. They have a lot of work, children are getting worse every year. I cannot say that in our country there is any danger from students to the teachers, but the students are very lazy, a great deal of them are raised by only mother (after a divorce of their parents). TV has a great influence on the poor children, they don’t like to read or to learn, They want to be successful without any work. They want to have a lot of money “hear and now”.

May be this is a common problem for all the Earth?
