The super bowl was awesome with commercial adds to match!!

    Man ,
This year Super bowl commercials were the weiredest , tear jerkers ever.
I must say ,in my opinion ,the puppy-monkey baby commercial came on top last night as the weirdest comertical of all time.

Man , it was a night I never forget. We got all rawdy!!! It was some night , I m telling you.
I watched the super bowl with a bunch of diehard fan friends. It was a totall partisan watch. Man , good thing we didn’t get physical or sth ; by I mean we didn’t get into fight or sth.

It was the best super bowl ever.

    “That is All Folks ,”

    Hi,
Dear Mari Carmen, I can’t say that I have understood very well your answer about “political correctness”,
but thank you very much. I like to read our opinions.

  5. Tania says:

    Hi,
I have the same question reading Super Tuesday in Learn English Magazine,
why the donkey and the elephant?
According to the Wikipedia, political cartoonist Thomas Nast is credited with making the donkey
the recognized symbol of the Democratic Party in 1870.
The public was taken by it and by 1880 it had already become the unofficial symbol of the party.

The same Thomas Nast was also responsible for the Republican Party elephant.

  7. Tania says:

    Hi,
It is very important to know these symbols as I have seen a political cartoon,
a ferocious fight between a donkey and an elephant.
    I now know its meaning.

What can I say about English Cafe 541 talking abou Mae West; Harvey Washington Wiley and The Poison Squad; real versus actual versus true; lunch versus a lunch; to put (one’s) shoulder to the wheel? Always useful. New concepts, new definitions, new every things. My favorite. Thanks Teachers team.

  12. Mari Carmen says:

    Hello everyone

I adore originality. Yes, I do, but to tell the truth, I can’t find very original – better said exciting – the origins of the symbols for the Democrat and Republican Party. I had imagined that the donkey, mule, horse or whatever would have to do for example with golden searchers, and the elephant with some adventure republican persona. Now I see that the story is much less romantic that I could have imagined. In any case, thanks you Tania for letting us know about Thomas Nass.

As for political correctness, I assume that you don’t understand what I say, since sometimes I can hardly ever understand myself! It is not easy for me to express in my own language, so it is even worse in a second language. As you said, hopefully our linguistic teachers shall explain it to us. More or less, I tried to give my opinion about a dark side of political correct language, very close to the bad feature of hypocrisy.

    That’s all for now!!
    ?
