How does the Unlimited English Membership work?

As a paid member, you get access to ALL 1,800+ Daily English and Cultural English. You can stream lessons on your computer or mobile device, or download them on our Android and iOS apps. Please note that if you cancel your membership, you will not be able to listen to the lessons.

You can listen to as many lessons as you want to and as often as you would like. There are no limits! You can improve as quickly as you want to.

How do I log in and start listening to my lessons?

Pick the way you'll listen. The steps are simple.

How long do I have access to the lessons?

Your access starts on the first day of your free 7-day trial, and you can listen to all 1,800+ lessons during those 7 days. On day 8 we charge your card, either $29 for the monthly plan or $290 for the annual plan. After that you keep access for as long as your membership is paid, and you can listen to as many lessons as you want each month.

Once your membership ends, you will NOT be able to listen to your lessons. You must have an active, paid monthly membership to listen to lessons, including ones downloaded on one of our apps. Unlimited English membership does not include our video courses or special courses.

How does the 7-day free trial work?

You get 7 days to try all of our 1,800+ lessons for free. You can cancel your trial anytime before Day 7. On Day 8, your credit card is charged either $29 (for monthly plan) or $290 (for annual plan), depending on which you signed up for. We will email you 2 days before we charge you to remind you. Your membership will then renew every 30 days (for the monthly plan) or every year (for the annual plan) until you cancel. We also offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. If your English does not improve, email us within 30 days of your first payment and we return 100% of your money, no questions asked. That is the same for the monthly plan and the annual plan.

How does a subscription work?

Unlimited English is a subscription, which means you are charged until you cancel. But you can cancel anytime – it's easy! Just click on your account icon (top, right corner) and then click Manage Subscriptions. You can cancel your membership there. You will still have access to the lessons until the end of your current 30-day subscription period, or, for our yearly plan, until the end of your 12 months.

Note: If you are canceling and also want a refund, you must email us within 30 days of your first payment. This is true for both monthly and annual memberships. After 30 days we cannot refund you. We do not refund automatically when you cancel, so you must email us to ask for it. To stop your next payment, cancel at least 3 days before your renewal date.

How do I cancel my membership?

It's easy! Just click on your account icon (top, right corner) and then click Manage Subscriptions. You can cancel your membership there. You will still have access to the lessons until the end of your current 30-day subscription period, or 12 months if you are on a yearly plan. Annual plans can be canceled anytime during the 12 months, and refunds can only be requested within 30 days of your first payment. To make sure your next payment does not go through, cancel at least 3 days before your renewal date.

Can I cancel my Unlimited English membership in the middle of the month?

You may cancel anytime and you will not be charged again for the next month (30 days) for monthly memberships, or when your annual membership would normally renew. However, you will not receive a partial refund for the remainder of the current 30 days on your membership.

What if I am unhappy with my Unlimited English Membership?

We would never want you to be unhappy! If you are not satisfied, email us within 30 days of your first payment and we will give you 100% of your money back. This is the same for monthly and annual plans. After 30 days we cannot refund you.

General Questions

How is ESLPod.com different from other online English courses?

ESLPod.com uses a very different approach from that of other courses or websites. Our method is based on the fact – supported by more than 40 years of scientific research – that the fastest way to improve your English is to listen to conversations and discussions you can understand.

Many people try to improve their English by listening or reading things in English that are too difficult. They understand only 40-50%, which means they are wasting half of their time!

Our English lessons are provided at a slower speed and include useful everyday phrases and expressions. We explain in detail and with examples what these expressions mean and how to use them in a simple and clear way. This research-based approach is the best way to improve your English quickly so you can speak it easily and confidently.

ESLPod.com was developed by a team of experienced English language learning professors with over 30 years of high school, adult, and university ESL teaching experience. ESLPod.com's founders, Dr. Jeff McQuillan and Dr. Lucy Tse, are recognized experts in the field of language learning. They have published research-based books used as textbooks in university courses as well as dozens of scientific research articles in linguistics and language learning, and have appeared as experts in the media, including CNN, Los Angeles Times, and San Francisco Chronicle, among many others.

I'm only an intermediate speaker of English. Is this course for me?

Yes! ESLPod.com lessons are for intermediate and advanced English learners. Our lessons are not "leveled" or in order of difficulty. Any intermediate or advanced speaker of English can use any lesson.

You can listen to our dialogues at both a "learning speed" (a little slower and clearer than regular speech) and a "normal speed" (the way Americans naturally speak). You'll hear a clear and detailed explanation of the difficult and key terms. You will also have a complete transcript of every word spoken in each lesson, so you can follow along as you listen or find the words you aren't sure about or simply want to see in writing.

I'm not sure if these lessons are for me. Are there any free lessons so I can try them first?

Of course! Just click here to get 5 Phrases That Make You Easier to Understand in English, a free 10-minute audio lesson.

What kind of lessons do you have?

We have two kinds of lessons:

1) Daily English – dialogues and stories using conversational American English with detailed explanations of how to use each of the key expressions and idioms. These lessons are 15-20 minutes each.

Topics include: About You, Business, Clothing/Grooming, Daily Life, Education, Entertainment/Sports, Food/Drink, Government/Law, Health/Medicine, Home/Community, Money, Nature/Weather, Relationships/Family, Shopping, Technology, Transportation, and Travel.

2) Cultural English – contains information to help you understand the United States and American culture. Learn English as you learn about the United States. These lessons are 25-30 minutes each.

Topics include: Classic Movies/TV Shows, Cities and Landmarks, Presidents, Authors, Scientists, Famous Songs and Singers, and much more.

How long are your lessons?

"Daily English" lessons include a 20-minute audio file plus a Learning Guide, and take approximately 60 minutes each to complete.

"Cultural English" lessons have a 30-minute audio file plus Learning Guide, and take about 75 minutes to complete.

Are the lessons in American English or British English?

All of our lessons are produced in American English and the "Cultural English" topics focus on the United States and its people, past and present.

I've been listening to ESLPod for years. What happened to the free lessons on iTunes and at ESLPod.com?

We still have a selection of some of our best episodes on our Speak English with ESLPod.com Podcast.

What is Rich Comprehensible Input™ and why does it work?

It's the method we built based on our work with Dr. Stephen Krashen, our former professor and co-author. The short version: language acquisition happens when you understand input one step above your current level ("i + 1"). It does not happen by memorizing rules, using flashcards, or "practicing" speaking. You need to listen, understand, and get that input over and over until your brain is ready to speak and understand fast English. Read about the science here.

How long until I notice progress?

Most members who listen and read the lessons daily notice improvements in their understanding within a few months. You'll soon find yourself understanding a movie line you would have missed before, or saying something out loud without translating it first. It comes from getting enough hours of clear, understandable input. More input = easier understanding = more speaking.

Who are Dr. Jeff McQuillan and Dr. Lucy Tse?

We're the two people who write and host every lesson. Both of us have Ph.D.s in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and Education, and both studied with Dr. Stephen Krashen at the University of Southern California, who did some of the early research on comprehensible input. We've been teaching students like this since 2005. Over 15 million people have learned English with us, and more than 1 billion of our lessons have been downloaded worldwide.

How is this different from Duolingo, Babbel, or online tutors?

Most apps and tutors focus on either rote memorization or "output" practice, forcing you to speak before you're ready. They're based on now-disproven 19th century theories of how we learn languages. Unlimited English is for adults who enjoy practical English in lessons that are funny and interesting. We use current scientific research to create real, interesting English at a level you can actually understand. The result is the ability to listen to fast English and to speak more fluently.

What level of English do I need to start?

Unlimited English is built for intermediate learners, people who can already understand basic English but have trouble with "fast" English and with speaking. If you're a complete beginner, we're not for you. Come back when you've acquired the basics.

Is this only for American English?

The hosts are American, so the accent is American English. But the vocabulary, the grammar, and the method work for any English you'll need, whether it is British, Australian, or international business English. The way clear English works is the same everywhere.
