Backing Up Your Computer

In a recent poll (questionnaire of people’s opinions) done by a major technology company, 35% of adult computer users in the U.S. and the U.K. don’t back up their data (stored or saved information). That means that they don’t make an extra copy of their data in case the original is lost or damaged. What may be even more surprising is that 50% of the people who lost data in the past still don’t perform backups.

images1.jpgI admit that for many, many years, I never backed up my data, even after more than one of my computers crashed (stopped working completely). I don’t know if I liked living dangerously, believed it would never happen again, or was too lazy to back up. I think it was probably all three reasons. Now that I work on the podcast, I have to do back ups or else all of our work is in jeopardy (danger). But some days, even though my computer is set to automatically back up, I forget to turn on the extra hard drive where the files are stored. I guess I’m still as lazy as I’ve always been!

eheheh I understand you, laziness is my worst defect!!! 🙂

But technology could be very unfriendly sometimes, so let’s back up always!!!! Loosing my job files or my dearest pics and movies has always been a big fear!

And remember, usb-pens are not that safe, don’t use them to store unique data, but only to make copies and transport copied data! The safest thing is an external hard disk, brava Lucy! 🙂

big cheers from Rome, Italy!!!!!! and thank you a lot for this wonderful and useful website and your precious job!!!

Yes, backup isn´t common among simple users. But just backup the data ins´t sufficient
The most important in addition to backup the data is to be able to recover it. And too many people forget that…

    Take care.

people are waiting for same online service that will back up their data on the computer. It has to be very easy. I imagine it as follows: you will purchase online store on the internet server (it has to be very cheap). Program on your computer will check your new files and upload them on the internet. The biggest proglem is probably just a security, because anyone can guarantee 100% security of your data. But I would be cool, hm? 🙂

Last month a thief stole my notebook with all my data. Luckily I had a backup on my external hard drive, then nothing went lost.

    Hi,
I am sorry for an off top. It’s about today’s English Cafe 114.
I thought we already had a topic about Boston earlier and it was a pretty same story.
I really found it – it was the English Cafe 45. I need listen to compare it again, but I can make it only a little bit later.
I guess Jeff really likes the city of Boston although he was here last time 20 years ago )))

Twice fI have lost everrything because I din’t back up anything from my hard disk.
Now external hard disk are very chip, so it is quite easy to do back up from time to time.
All important things now like ESL podcast, audiobooks, photos or some good movies are in external hard disks
so I am happy, because I may think that they are safe, or that is what I think, we’ll see in future if something happens
    to the p.c..

I think if there are something important, we should back up regularly. May be it took your time but in some ways, it’ll helpful. Even I don’t believe in some CD quality and I copied all my data into my computer.. I don’t have external hard drive.. Going to buy it oneday ^^
