  1. Aécio Flávio Perim says:

I’d like to suggest Jeff to talk about Zodiac signs. I’m Scorpion. And you? I think this is an interesting topic.
    Aecio

  2. Dan says:

    Hi there Aecio,

Do not forget to always check the search box on the main page. I often forget about that tool myself.

If you search for Zodiac you’ll be able to find English Café 353 where Jeff talks about it.

I am not going to tell you my sign just because as a Carl Edward Sagan admirer I do not believe in those things.

By the way, it is worth reminding that these days NASA is celebrating the Apollo 11 45th anniversary that put the first man on the Moon.

Beautiful videos to watch at the NASA’s channel on You tube

    Thanks

  3. Tania says:

Hi, Dan! Thank you for reminding us about Apollo 11 mission.
Neil Armstrong described the event as “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”.
According to Wikipedia, Apollo 11 ended the Space Race and fulfilled a national goal
“landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”

  4. Tania says:

Hi! Regarding the vehicles…SUV, RVs, Off – road vehicle…
I have to be more carefully reading about the vehicles in our magazines.
Maybe we use the same term of off-road vehicle and I don’t know.
Nice lesson “Driving an Off-Road Vehicle”!
Many new words and , of course, “whoopee”. It’s a new word to me.

  5. Tania says:

Hi! Very interesting and “Conducting a Search”.
I was wondering “search” or “research”?
Thanks to my dictionary I have found that:
to research – a systematic investigation into a subject in order to discover theories, applications…
to search – to go or look through carefully in order to find something missing or lost.
They searched the woods for missing child.

    Thank you.

  6. Tania says:

Hi! Thank you for the explanation of the sentence “I was picturing a drive in the country”.
    I was imagining a drive…
    I would have translated: I was drawing…

  7. Tania says:

Hi! From technical reasons I think that I can’t contact you for two weeks.

    I miss you all.

    All the best for you,

    Tania

  8. Aécio Flávio Perim says:

Thanks Dan for remembering me about that tool and English Café 353. I’m a little lazy and don’t like to search. I hope to exchange ideas with you more times.
    Aecio

  9. Aécio Flávio Perim says:

    Thanks everybody.
    Aecio

  10. Aécio Flávio Perim says:

Hi, Dan. In fact, I found the podcast 353 and watched it. Now I know the twelve signs of Zodiac. They are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Did you see?
    Aecio

  11. Aécio Flávio Perim says:

    Thanks Jeff for the knowledge.
    Aecio

My trip to Berlin, and other cities of Germany.

It’s early to tell, just ten days have passed since my first impression of Berlin, and the question I ask myself is:

    I liked it ?
May I think about this huge city ?
How much I have missed for viewing ?

Starting from the end I’m sure I’ve failed to see almost everything.
A city that has almost 900 km. squares that fit nine times the area of Paris is almost impossible to see over a lifetime.
I have seen very little, the center, the great monuments that have been recently built and already erected several years in the West Berlin.
Given this premise, my opinion about this city is quite subjective, and can not be a guide or reason to visit or not visiting this great capital city of Germany today.

What is true it is that I liked it less that I expected.
I did expect more, and certainly I didn´t think in going to find a city under construction.
Gigantic works that blur the vision of a modern city can be.

Big, huge cranes that cloud the skyline of the city, look where ever you look you will find a crane, or more, and walking see empty spaces and large tunnels of leaving huge and long pipelines that cross areas of the western town from side to side.
They told me they needed to dry the soil to build new structures.

It seems that much remains to be done, a lot actually, and overwhelms already accomplished.
It is a city of wide open spaces, large parks, countless channels, several rivers that continually pass by tourist boats, or other hauling materials for the works, and especially in the Great Plains in summer tourists and Berliners enjoying the sunshine when it rains they lie.
That if you bags, you freeze, you burn the sun, or the rain will soak it all in the same day, clear in summer, in winter it must be something very different.

For many years we have wanted to visit the city, for me I think I must visit Berlin.
The city is a piece of history of the twentieth century that remains there, alive, not is extinguished, and the surprising contrast between the two parts of the city.

Communist sector, socialist or former GDR, and distinctly different from the western sector however were running large companies and German companies that moved to cities like Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Nuremberg or the same.
again now want to be in Belin, the capital of Germany, so all they want to transform everything that has not been done, but the task is enormous.

Sectors of West Berlin ended are WONDERFUL to behold.
It is amazing to imagine the works can be made, sometimes without rhyme or reason, a large skyscrapers next to small built in postwar buildings.
Everything is huge, huge, huge, with plenty of room for cars and pedestrians who never feel feeling cramped.
Thas Berlin is ideal for those who do not want crowds.

You will be alone all day without anyone bothering you with their presence, ideal for to be alone or lovers of the great outdoors.
Larger moles not clogged, and modern buildings as all those relating to the Federal Government of Germany are ideal, ecological, spacious, with large windows to take advantage of the light and a dome what is a dream that dominates nearly everything over the city.

And regarding the first question I ask me, liked me?.
I would have to think better , pass the time and limit my feelings.
I found it very interesting, necessary for my historical training events experienced in the distance and that conditioned my world of the fifties, sixties, seventies and part of the eighties.
Would I even say that watching this eastern sector of Berlin confirmed the ideas that come time for treasuring.

Berlin is a city tied to the history of the twentieth century in an indelible way.
liked me, and made ??much be there, see the remains of the wall paintings, lines of cobblestones in the street pointing at all times where he passed the wall between two irreconcilable worlds, the western capitalist democracy and repressive and totalitarian socialism.

See the white crosses in memory of those killed or murdered in their attempts to publicly cross the wall, no one did anything, staring impassively the shooting of children, women, men, elders who wanted to escape from a gray and dictatorial world, says little of the great powers of Democrats called those years.
History repeating itself Jews killed with impunity without the power to do anything about it. Looked the other way the great Nations before the Second World.

NOT But here is mercilessly machine-gunned everyone who tried to reach what they imagined “free world” and the soldiers of the Western side looked impassive the killing of thousands of civilians massacred by the simple fact of wanting to escape a world that did not fit into their lives.

It is this part of town the one I do not like, is oppressive, drab, gray, and winter has to be depressing.
I can get an idea of what was then the socialist world in the GDR and yes I got such status looking the buildings and the WALL.

    I liked? YES and NO.

I have liked to see it, it’s exciting for anyone who knows how living in Berlin was and has lived the story, but is not a city that can be said is pretty.
It has wonderful areas, no doubt, and it will be over time possibly the capital of Europe if Germany continues to grow as it does.

Germany lost two world wars, but is winning or has won the third war, the economy war, and that does not have the slightest doubt for me after seeing what I saw.

Maybe we, Europeans, need Germany to win and this country is going to pull the carriage as it has done in recent years.

After all this is said, I do think the trip to Berlin it is necessary and very instructive.

  13. Marcos says:

    Good morning everyone

Grease! amazing, Saturday night … good remember. The best years on my life was 80s. I remember that crazy days when I made a marathon, 15 days on a “discoteca” ( place to dance ), day after day.

    Thank you Jeff

  14. Dan says:

    Thank you Emiliano.

I appreciated your piece about Berlin.

Living in a small town surrounded by mounts, I would probably feel overwhelmed by all those huge open spaces.

    Bye.

  15. Dan says:

    Hi there Betty.

Today on France 24 I saw an interesting reportage from your city Hong Kong.

In short, they followed a young and brave journalist working for an independent local station while doing his job.

Apparently it is becoming harder to be a free and independent journalist over there lately, according to the report.

It seems that someone in mainland China is not happy with that.

I am keeping an eye on the news coming from there. It will be interesting to follow how the situation evolves.

    Thank you, bye

  16. Marcos says:

    Hi everyone

Here, in my country, we say something like that, ” let’s not count with the eggs inside chicken”. It’s normal to say ” let’s not get ahead of ourselves” too, but in some places we say ” don’t put cart ( vehicle pulled by horse or bull ) ahead of the bulls”

Thanks you two, Jeff and Lucy
