I decided to search this website using the word ‘garden’, and I found two episodes: 1. 2008-10-24 – ESL Podcast 419 – Planting a Garden; and 2. 2010-11-26 – ESL Podcast 637 – Planting Flowers and Trees.

My brain was injected by the sweet smells of flowers and grasses as soon as I heard Lucy read the line ‘Smell that fresh air’ in Podcast 419.

I could imagine myself standing in the middle of the back garden of my house, smelling that fresh air.

I wish I can step into a time machine which will transport me back to my own gardens in England.

I also wish I can have a robotic lawnmower to cut all the grasses for me. Not that I don’t like mowing the lawns myself, but I really want a useful new toy.

These two episodes are really useful to me. Apart from needing green thumbs (In England they use the expression ‘green fingers’), we need to know all the special words and terms in order to make people understand us.

It seemed to me that Jeff does not know too much about gardening, because he says in the podcast 637: ‘At least that’s what I think happens – I’m not a gardener!’, and also, at the end he says: ‘From Los Angeles, California, I’m Jeff McQuillan. I have no idea what I just said or what it means! Thank you for listening’.

I did not know anything about gardening before me and my husband bought a house in England. After we bought a house with front and back gardens, we needed to look after the gardens and all the plants in them.

At first we hired a gardener to help. It was not ideal because a gardener could only stay for a short time, we still needed to know how to look after the plants after the gardener had gone home.

The next thing I did was to watch a lot of gardening programmes on TV and bought lots of gardening books.

One of my favourite Broadcaster/gardener/writers is Alan Titchmarsh, all gardeners in England know about him. Another series of gardening books I like reading is the ‘Expert Guides’ under Dr David Gerald Hessayon, a British author and botanist of Cypriot descent.

Now I know a bit more about gardening and it is one of the most useful things I have learned in my life.
